SUMMARY:Aquila Theatre: The Great Gatsby - The Arts Council of Central Louisiana
DESCRIPTION:The Arts Council of Central Louisiana is proud to present Aquila Theatre: The Great Gatsby!\n\n  \nJoin the Arts Council of Central Louisiana for Aquila Theatre: The Great Gatsby on Friday\, February 18\, 2022 at 7:30 PM\nBeneath all the glitter\, glamour and glitz of the Roaring Twenties was a culture of success defined by extravagance — of classism where prejudice is used as a weapon to bolster one’s fragile sense of self\, a time of wealth\, material possessions\, and obsession masquerading as love. The Great Gatsby\, written in 1924\, is a deeply moving and honest portrayal of class\, racism\, and prejudice in American society. In what was originally titled\, Under the Red White and Blue\, F. Scott Fitzgerald painted a vivid picture of how the quest for the American dream in the absence of true equality can lead to devastating effects. The story centers around a “self-made” Jay Gatsby\, a man from a working-class background\, who had previously fallen in love with wealthy heiress\, Daisy Buchanan. After returning from his military service he finds that Daisy had married blue-blood\, Tom Buchanan. Gatsby\, determined to win her back\, does whatever it takes to reinvent himself into the man he thinks Daisy will want.\n\n  \nAquila Theatre’s Desiree Sanchez is creating a new theatrical adaptation that will speak to how this book resonates within our current culture. With its clever and impactful designs\, superb actors and insightful direction\, Aquila’s production of The Great Gatsby is sure to be the must see show of the season. Aquila Theatre’s mission is to create bold reinterpretations of the classics for contemporary audiences. By expanding the canon and diversifying the classics\, Aquila dares to change perceptions.\n  \nAquila Theatre Company\, founded in London by Peter Meineck in 1991 with a production of Aeschylus’s Agamemnon at the Bridge Lane Theatre in London\, and began touring in the United States to a few universities. The company\, along with its founder moved to the United States in 1994\, and in 1998\, Aquila Theatre became a U.S. based non-profit theatre company.\n  \nAquila Theatre is one of the foremost producers of classical theatre in the United States. Aquila brings audiences world-class actors\, captivating designs\, innovative adaptations\, and impactful direction. Aquila Theatre also provides extensive educational offerings and is an award-winning leader in the field of public arts and humanities programming.\n\n  \n“The classics made relevant with superb acting and clever staging.” –The New Yorker\n\n  \n“Takes the classics off their pedestals and presents them as live action\, flesh and blood adventures.” — Dramatics Magazine\n\n  \n  \nAquila Theatre: The Great Gatsby will be presented on Friday\, February 18th @ 7:30 PM at Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center.\nSpecial Sponsors include: The City of Alexandria\, The Greater Alexandria Economic Development Authority\,  Hotel Bentley\,  & The Alexandria/Pineville Convention & Visitors Bureau.\nTicket pricing is as followed:\nGeneral Admission: $20 | Senior: $15 | Student/Child (ages 3+): $10 | Family (2 adults + 2 students): $50 \n        To purchase tickets\, please fill out the form below or Click Here. \n*Tickets available at the door on the night of the performance. DESCRIPTION:LSUA Empty Space Players invites you to \nDoubt: A Parable\, by John Patrick Shanley  \nDirected by Robert Harper \n\n  \nDoubt examines the human tendency to convict others with our own convictions and to doubt others with our own doubts.  Winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for Best Play\, Doubt is set at St. Nicholas\, a Catholic school in the Bronx in 1964.  Sister Aloysius\, the strict and strong-minded principal\, suspects that the young priest\, Father Flynn\, might be making improper advances toward the school’s first African-American student.  She enlists the aid of a young teacher\, Sister James\, in her efforts to validate her concerns and confront Father Flynn.  Flynn is as adamant in his denial of any wrongdoing as Sister Aloysius is certain of his guilt.  With Sister James and the student’s mother\, Mrs. Muller\, caught in the middle\, the priest and principal face off in a battle of wills.\n\n  \n Performance dates and times:\nNovember 11\, 12\, & 13 at 7:30 PM; November 14 at 2:30\nNovember 18\, 19 & 20 at 7:30; November 21 at 2:30\n  \nTickets prices are as follows: \nGeneral: $10.00 \nSeniors & Students (with I.D): $5.00 \n***Please note that on-line sales are closed on the weekends but tickets are available and may be purchased at the Box Office door for all performances.***\n  \nAll performances will be in the Gwartney Theatre in Mulder Hall on the LSUA campus. There will be no late seating. \nFor more information\, call (318) 473-6473\, or email esp@lsua.edu.

SUMMARY:Well Groomed - Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers
DESCRIPTION:Join The Arts Council of Central Louisiana on Wednesday\, November 20th  at 7:00 PM for a screening of Well Groomed. This film is part of the 2019 – 2020 Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. Q & A with the Director Rebecca Stern and Justin Levy (Producer) will follow the screening. \nTickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. \nAbout the film: \n\nCompetitive creative dog grooming is the most colorful competition in America. Well Groomed poignantly captures the creative process and traveling with four women at the center of the competition as they enrich their lives through this fascinating intersection of art and animals. Following champion groomers and their gorgeous\, vibrant dogs through a year in the life on the technicolor competition circuit\, Well Groomed effervescently explores an American not often portrayed in cinema.\n\nFrom South Carolina to California\, New York to Arkansas\, the film follows dog groomers from their homes to large-scale dog grooming competitions and showrooms where their communities meet\, discuss\, and compete with technicolor exuberance. As the film unfolds\, we meet Adriane\, Nicole\, Cat and Angela. Perpetual runner-up\, Adriane has an intense drive to prove herself a winner\, and is beloved by her competitors for being so kind and friendly. Nicole hopes to connect with people in the grooming community as much as she connects with her dogs at home\, while facing the very real challenge of turning her struggling grooming shop into a successful business. Cat is the champion in the show ring but\, over the year\, must come to terms with competition’s reality as responsibilities outside of the grooming circuit surface. And Angela is the glue that binds the creative grooming industry with her innovative beauty products\, extremely adept grooming skills and swagger that comes from constant success. Outside the competition ring\, working as professional groomers\, they spend their limited spare time away from washing\, blow-drying\, and fluffing other people’s dogs caring for their own numerous pets and experimenting with new designs on their show dogs\, finding creative inspiration in their seemingly mundane surroundings. These women are revolutionizing the age-old question – what is art?\n\n  \nWell Groomed is a vibrant dive in to a colorful subculture of Americana. Director Rebecca Stern has captured a seemingly effortless ride-along experience with artists who are at the top of their craft. Well Groomed is a revealing look at pets\, families\, friendships and the glory of creativity through a bright prism of color. \n\n  \n \nWELL GROOMED Trailer from Rebecca Stern on Vimeo. \nSouthern Circuit is the South’s only tour of filmmakers\, providing communities with an interactive way of experiencing independent film. Southern Circuit provides organizations with the opportunity to screen work from emerging filmmakers and some of the medium’s most respected directors.  The Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers is a program of South Arts. Southern Circuit screenings are funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUMMARY:A Doll's House - Spectral Sisters
DESCRIPTION:Spectral Sisters is proud to present A Doll’s House! \nIn 1879\, Henrik Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House\,” became an immediate sensation\, telling the story of Nora\, a woman married to a domineering husband after being raised by a domineering father.  Though their marriage seems happy on the surface\, Nora has had to sacrifice her honor and personhood. In 1879\, a woman couldn’t vote\, couldn’t conduct business without her husband’s permission\, and could not refuse her husband’s sexual advances.  We’ve set our “A Doll’s House” in 1959\, when a woman could vote\, but was otherwise still subject to her husband’s control. \n  \nA blackmailer threatens to reveal a crime Nora committed to save her husband’s life. Disillusioned by her husband’s response\, Nora realizes she has to change her life—to grow up and be a reasonable human being with a mind of her own—or end her life. Her decision shocked audiences in 1879 and will make current audiences think about what it means to be a human being and what it means to love one. \nA Doll’s House will be performed Thursday through Saturday from November 7th to November 9th @ 7:30 PM and Sunday\, November 10th @ 2:30 PM on the Hearn Stage at the Kress Theatre.   \nTickets: General Admission $10.00 ; Teachers & Students $5.00.
